Personalizing Your Notifications in Canvas

In Canvas, students get to decide how often they receive notifications about all sorts of things in their classes—here’s how to customize your updates.

First, you’ll need to log into your Canvas account. Go to canvas.ubc.ca and log in using your Campus-Wide Login (CWL). Navigate over to the dark blue bar on the left and click ‘Account’ and then ‘Notifications.’ This page is your control center for notifications!

You have the choice of being notified immediately, daily, weekly, or not at all when something is updated in your classes. You can click on the icons on the right hand side to set your notification preferences—the green icon is your selected setting. There’s no need to ‘save’ anything, as Canvas automatically updates your preferences.

While you’re here, take a quick moment to click around the rest of your settings. A couple of recommended things to do (that just take a minute!) are…

  • Add some more details about yourself by clicking ‘Account’ -> ‘Profile.’ You can add an avatar, write a bio, link to other sites, and update your contact information.
  • Check out Canvas’s ePortfolios. They allow you to share content across classes and even outside of UBC. You can access your ePortfolios by clicking ‘Account’ -> ‘ePortfolios.’ Some of your classes may use ePortfolios, or you might want to use them to share your work to others.

The important thing to remember is to take the time to explore all that Canvas has to offer. This platform is incredibly user-friendly, so it just takes ten minutes to look around and figure out how you can customize Canvas to suit your needs.
